Practice Profile
Chris joined Donovan & Company in October 2007 after working as a sole practitioner for six years, primarily in aboriginal law. Prior to entering private practice, Chris worked as an advisor to the BC Treaty Commission.
Chris represents First Nations on a wide range of issues including treaty negotiations, consultation and accommodation negotiations, governance matters, business development and specific claims.
Aboriginal Law Experience
- Treaty Negotiations - acting as an integral part of the negotiating team, both in helping to define the client’s mandate and strategy and in negotiating with the federal and provincial governments; drafting chapters; preparing position papers and negotiating and reviewing Treaty Related Measures
- Consultation and Accommodation - coordinating and assisting responses to referrals; participating in environmental assessments and other formal reviews of major projects; negotiating benefit sharing agreements; follow up work with clients to implement and enforce agreements
- Governance - drafting options papers on restructuring client’s government post-treaty; drafting and interpreting election codes and constitutions; helping to develop and review policies and procedures manuals; negotiating service agreements; advice and representation on employment and administrative disputes
- Business Development - creating, restructuring, purchasing, selling and maintaining corporations, partnerships, joint ventures, limited partnerships and other business entities; drafting and reviewing tenures and various commercial agreements
- Specific Claims - overseeing research and drafting of claims under the federal Specific Claims Process
