Karim Ramji is a member of the firm. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at University of British Columbia in 1989 and has practiced in the area of aboriginal law since 1991. He joined Donovan & Company in 2003.
He has a broad practice that includes corporate commercial work, litigation and negotiation.
Aboriginal Law Experience
Litigation and Negotiation
- Represented survivors of childhood physical and sexual abuse suffered in the residential schools for claims of damages against the Federal Government and the Churches;
- Represented locatees in claims against the Federal Government;
- Represented First Nations in negotiations with the Provincial Government on gaming issues;
- Represented First Nations in negotiations with municipalities on servicing agreements;
- Represented First Nations in negotiations with School Districts on local education agreements;
- Represented First Nations in Specific Claims against the Federal Government; and
- Represented First Nations on environmental issues, including the clean up of contaminated sites and impacts from off-reserve projects on reserve lands and traditional territories.
Commercial Experience
- Represented First Nations in major real estate/leasing transactions, including for the development of a 100,000 square foot retail facility;
- Represented locatees in the development of residential and commercial subdivisions;
- Represented First Nations in joint ventures for the development and ownership of hydroelectric projects;
- Represented First Nations in forestry joint ventures with industry partners; and
- Represented First Nations in joint ventures for casino and resource developments.
Governance Matters
- Represented First Nations in Treaty matters;
- Drafted and implemented bylaws for Band Council; and
- Advised Band Council on governance issues.
